Employment and Work in the U.S. (including athletes and entertainers)

What Kind of Visa Do I Need to Work in the United States?

There are several different types of visas that permit you to work in the United States.  For full details see http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1286.html.

I’m an athlete (coach/trainer/mechanic, etc.) and plan to go to the United States to participate in a tournament or sporting event.  What type of visa do I need?

In general, the type of visa required (if any) is based on whether you will be paid or compete for prize money from a U.S. source.  This is a fact-specific determination, however.  We recommend that you send a detailed description of your planned activity to brusselsvisainquiry@state.gov and a member of our staff will provide information if a visa category exists for your proposed activity. If a visa is required, most frequently it will be in the “O” or “P” category.  For detailed information about these types of visas please see http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1286.html.
