Estimated Tax for 2009
Estimated tax is used to pay tax on income that is not subject to any, or sufficient, withholding. In most cases, you must make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for 2009 (after subtracting your withholding and credits) and you expect your withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of:
1. 90% of the tax to be shown on your 2009 tax return; or
2. 100% of the tax shown on your 2008 tax return if such return covered all twelve months of the tax year.
Exception: U.S. citizens or resident aliens for all of 2008 do not have to pay estimated tax if they had no tax liability for the full twelve-month 2008 tax year.
For further information or to pay estimated tax for 2009 as a U.S. citizen or resident alien, please consult Form 1040-ES.
