How to Apply by Mail
Step-by-Step:
- Read and complete thoroughly the Form DS-82 passport application and the credit card slip. Please read the instructions for completing the passport application form carefully as the application will be returned if it is not completed properly.
Please answer every question on the passport application form, also include the social security number (SSN). The application cannot be processed if the SSN or any other information is missing. ! Please answer every question on the passport application form ! - Enclose two recent identical 5x5 cm passport size photos (see list of specialized photographers). Attention: for technical reasons no self-printed passport pictures can be accepted by the consulate! See underneath for full details on the format of the photographs to submit.
- Enclose the old passport. It will be cancelled and returned to you.
- Enclose a self-addressed envelope with € 5,78 in stamps PER PASSPORT so that we may return the passports by registered mail (see information on registered mail underneath).
- Complete and detach credit card slip.

No personal checks are accepted. Please do not send cash by mail!
Registered Mail
For maximum security, we will only return passports by registered mail. We strongly recommend that passports be mailed to us by registered mail also.
When you go to the post office, say you want to send and receive a letter "recommandé"/"aangetekend".
Put € 5,78 in stamps PER PASSPORT on the envelope to be returned with the new passport.
Fill in the "destinataire/geadresseerde" information for both "recommandé"/"aangetekend" slips (blue).
Enclose the registered mail demand with the application, 2 identical 5x5 cm photos, old passport, and completed credit card payment form.
Send everything to "Office of American Citizen Services - Passport Unit, U.S. Embassy, 25 Boulevard du Régent/Regentlaan 25 - 1000 Brussels"
Processing time
Please allow 15 workdays in addition to normal mail time between your home and Brussels.
Photo Requirements

Two identical unsigned photographs taken within the last six months.
2x2 inch.(5x5 cm) square, with the image measured from chin to forehead not less than 1" or more than 1-3/8". -
Photos should not be cut.

Non-glossy, non-plastic base paper with a white background. The back must not be waxy or have a coating that lessens adhesive.

Color; not tinted, with a light background.

Full-face with both ears showing; without an obscured hairline.

No dark glasses unless required for medical reasons.

Normal attire without headgear unless it is a religious observance.

Attention: for technical reasons no self-printed passport pictures can be accepted by the consulate!

Please note that the Consular Section is unable to use the smaller Belgian identification and passport photos. Please make sure that the photos you submit meet State Department requirements.

Adult renewal: $75
