Independence Day 2011

Embassy Teams up with Serve the City for Volunteer Service in Brussels

On the Fourth of July, the American national holiday, the Embassy of the United States teams up with “Serve the City” for volunteer service in Brussels.

As you know, July 4th will mark the American national holiday, Independence Day.

True to a well-established tradition, the Ambassador of the United States will give a reception at his residence for this occasion.

But that won’t be all.

In the wake of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s historic inaugural speech, which highlighted the importance of community service, the Embassy of the United States and its Belgian partners will unite to help those around us in need. As Kennedy famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you-- ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.”

On the morning of Monday, July 4th, Ambassador of the United States Howard Gutman and a team of Embassy volunteers will put themselves at the disposal of Serve the City, as part of that association’s Big Volunteer Week, from July 2 to July 9. This group will help out at one of Serve the City’s projects for the less fortunate—because, as Serve the City says so insightfully, “Many people doing small things together can make a big difference in our world!”
