Lost/Stolen Resident Alien Card
If your resident alien card (or green card) has been stolen or if it is lost, you may apply for a transportation letter in order to return to the United States. The Embassy is unable to issue a replacement green card because it can be issued only by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in the United States.
In order to apply for this transportation letter, you may come to the Immigrant Visa Section in person on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. with the following documents:
- your passport
- proof that you are a resident of the United States (e.g., your alien number, a copy of your green card)
- proof that you have not been away from your U.S. residence for more than one year
- a police report showing that the card was lost or stolen
- four full-face color photographs of 5 cm by 5 cm with a white background, taken within the last 6 months. Please note that this size is larger than the standard Belgian passport photo size . To check photo requirements and a list of photographers in Brussels, click here.
-
a USD 165.00 fee for the application payable at the Consulate in USD or euros in cash or with credit card (Visa, American Express, Master Card, Discover)
In order to be able to issue the transportation letter, the Embassy must obtain confirmation of your resident alien status from USCIS. Please note that this may take several working days.
Please note that if you left your green card in the United States, you should ask friends or relatives to send you the card by express mail.
